What documents are needed for customs clearance in Kenya?
General commercial cargo commonly needs a commercial invoice, packing list and transport document. An eligible local importer, consignee or authorized clearing agent must complete the import entry.
Importer and licensed clearing agent
A normal commercial import should use a Kenyan importer with the required taxpayer details and a licensed customs clearing agent to lodge the import declaration.
Invoice, packing list and origin documents
Common documents include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, freight evidence, certificate of origin and applicable permits or exemptions.
PVoC, CoC and product compliance
Products regulated under PVoC should complete conformity verification before export and carry a CoC issued through an appointed agent. Scope depends on the commodity and current rules.
Current Kenyan import rules require origin evidence. Goods controlled by standards, health, agriculture, medicines, communications or another regulator may also need a CoC, import permit or authority approval before shipment.
